Happy July !!
Today I was driving by the Dustin-Duston Garrison house in Haverhill, MA, and noticed it was open. I went home, grabbed my camera and headed back. I was greeted by one of Thomas Dustins descendants, a lovely woman named Diane Dustin. There were not many people when I went in, so I got a full tour :)
The home is located at 665 Hilldale Ave in Haverhill, MA 01832
Hannah Dustin was best known throughout Haverhill as the woman who scalped the Indians. She was taken captive by the Abenaki Indians after they raided her home. This is what Wikipedia has to say: Hannah on Wikipedia
As you walk in, this is the first floor. The Dustin Garrison Society has done an amazing job keeping the home as close to the original as possible, complete with tools and household items from the era. Click any photo to enlarge it.
This is the second floor.
Heading up to the attic.
Some of the original items that were in the home. Minus the Jim Beam decanter that quickly became a collector item. My Mom had one, I am still looking for one.
I was able to get a sneak peek at the basement, which is usually off limits for safety reasons. It was damp down there. The second photo was a hand built archway by Thomas Dustin that was the entrance to a tunnel leading underground from the property down to Little River. Years later this was also used for the Underground Railroad. Pretty neat huh ?!
More exterior photos from different angles.
When I left I decided to take a ride to the 2nd memorial statue of Hannah located in GAR Park in Haverhill.
This is the 2017 tour schedule if you would like to see this amazing piece of Haverhill history for yourself.
